Student Member of the Board of Trustees (SMBOT)

The role of the UIC Student Member of the Board of Trustees (SMBOT) is to represent an educated student viewpoint on policies and decisions decided by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois (BOT). Each BOT student trustee has all of the privileges of membership on the BOT, except that only one student trustee has the right to cast a legally binding vote on issues presented to the BOT. The Governor designates which one of the student trustees shall possess, for his or her entire term, the right to cast a legally binding vote. Each student trustee who does not possess the right to cast a legally binding vote has the right to cast an advisory vote and the right to make and second motions and to attend executive sessions.

The SMBOT should maintain an open dialogue with student organizations in order to better represent the interests of all students in his/her role with the University. The SMBOT is an ex-officio officer of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), Health Professions Student Council (HPSC), and the Graduate Student Council (GSC). The SMBOT is expected maintain an open dialogue with student organizations in order to better represent the interests of all students in his/her role with the University. The SMBOT is expected to meet bimonthly with the USG, HPSC and GSC. The SMBOT is expected to attend all BOT meetings, as well as additional meetings as may be assigned.

Undergraduate Student Government President

The role of the Undergraduate Student Government President is act as the official spokesperson for USG. This means, the President must represent both USG and the student body to each other as well as the University administration. The USG President recommends and appoints official students representatives to the University boards and committees not elected at large by the student body, to include hiring the Students for the Improvement of Teaching (SIT) coordinator as well as various other administrative , advisory, and cabinet positions within USG.

The USG President is responsible for formulating the annual goals, missions, initiatives, and internal policies of USG. The USG President may veto any action of the USG Legislative Assembly, and is responsible for determining the interpretation of the USG Constitution, the Standing Rules, and any other policies of USG.

The role of the Undergraduate Student Government Vice President is to aid the President in any matters relating to student affairs, and to preside over the Legislative Assembly in the absence of the President.  The USG Vice President also presides over a special committee charged with identifying student priorities and addressing those priorities. The USG Vice President does not have a vote on the Legislative Assembly, however may break any tie vote when a majority vote is required.

The USG Vice President manages internal affairs of USG and serves as the primary information manager for the organization.  The USG Vice President maintains records of all meetings and USG actions and acts as the primary contact for official USG information.

The USG Vice President also sets office policy, manages inventory, schedules office hours, manages all USG records and information, and maintaines official disciplinary records on USG members.  Finally, the USG Vice president
provides supervisory control over the maintenance and mangement of the USG budget.
